NTX Inno's 2021 local startup holiday gift guide

NTX Inno's 2021 local startup holiday gift guide

Throughout the events of the past year, it seems that now it’s more important than ever to support local businesses.

We also understand that finding that perfect gift for that particular relative can be a little daunting. In that spirit, NTX Inno is back with our annual gift guide, featuring products made from DFW-area startups.

While there’s more products and software that could fit in a list, we’ve curated this one to things that could easily be added to that online shopping cart or stuffed in the proverbial stocking last minute. Let’s dive in.

Food & Beverages

  • Poppi – Though this startup is planning on moving its headquarters to Austin, this apple cider vinegar-based beverage brand can be found in most Whole Foods stores, along with other retail locations. CAVU Ventures led its most recent $13.5 million funding round, fueling the expansion of its more than 50-person team.
  • ZUBI’S – Playing off of her last name and a word that translates to “bridge” in the Basque region of Spain, founder Sarah Zubiate has developed a brand of organic, plant-based and largely allergen-free Latin American dips. The company has gone from selling products from her trunk to landing on the shelves of 200 retail stores across 25 states.
  • Savor Pâtisserie – This winner of a $25,00 grand prize from H-E-B’s Quest for the Texas Best competition was crowned “Texas’ Best” by the grocery chain. The first North Texas company to win since 2014, Savor opened its first storefront in Casa Linda Plaza in 2016.
  • Ohla! foods  Chosen by Central Market for its debut on retail shelves, Ohla! makes almond flour-based tortillas and chips.
  • Electra Beverages – Founded by former WNBA player Fran Harris, Electra is a maker of healthy sports drinks. The Dallas- and Austin-based company came to fame early this year through a ‘Shark Tank’ deal with Barbara Corcoran, who offered $100,000 upfront, along with a $250,000 line of credit in exchange for a 30% stake of her sports drink and apparel startup.

Products

  • Autside - With a mission of giving back and giving a fresh face to classic backyard games, outdoor lifestyle CPG startup Autside unveiled its concept toward the beginning of the year with the launch of a crowdfunding campaign to help get the company off the ground. At its core, Autside is a maker of revamped outdoor games, planning to launch with products like a pickleball setup, bags and boards (otherwise known as cornhole) and a block tower game.
  • CURLē  Started by SMU student Mona El-Gharby, recent Impact Ventures grad CURLē is a brand of hair care products designed specifically for people with curly hair. El-Gharby told NTX Inno there are new products on the way in 2022.
  • Language Learning Market – Currently in the process of raising its $500,000 seed round, McKinney’s Language Learning Market is an online educational marketplace and language learning resource directory. The company’s three-part content platform is comprised of a marketplace to buy educational resources from businesses large and small worldwide, a directory of resources and places to learn, and an education-focused media network.
  • Solo Brands – After hitting the Nasdaq with a valuation of about $2.14 billion, Solo Brands – which consists of Solo Stove, Chubbies Shorts, Oru Kayak and ISLE – offers a number of outdoor lifestyle products. The company’s sales totaled $225 million for the first half of 2021.
  • Gardenuity – Launched in 2016, Gardenuity sells do-it-yourself gardening kits, complete with the nutrients the plants need to get growing. CEO Donna Letier said the company’s customers boast a 90% success rate with their plants. According to Letier, Gardenuity experienced 500% revenue growth from 2019 to 2020, marking a six-fold increase in the number of plants it sold.
  • Supply – The Fort Worth-based shaving products company has clients who love the product. So much so that Supply has raised around $450,000 via crowdfunding efforts, the most recent of which helped launch an updated version of its single-blade razor. Started in 2017 by husband-wife team Patrick and Jennifer Coddou, the company came to prominence with a $300,000 ‘Shark Tank’ deal it landed in 2019.
